The death of carousels — what replaced them

Hero carousels with auto-rotating slides are 1% click-through. They're still on 60% of sites. Why and what to do.

The death of carousels — what replaced them

Auto-rotating carousels have a documented click-through rate around 1%, mostly on the first slide. Slides 2-4 might as well be invisible.

The death of carousels — what replaced them
Hero patterns by effort vs measured impact.

Why they survive: stakeholders fight for "their slide". Marketing wants 3 messages, design adds 5. The carousel is a compromise nobody actually wanted.

What replaced them:

  • Single strong hero with one message. Confident, focused. Highest conversion.
  • Two-column with primary CTA + secondary. Lets you have a "side message" without dilution.
  • Animated illustration instead of slideshow. Same eye candy, better focus.

If your team insists on multiple messages, write 3 lines instead of 3 slides. Same area, 5x the comprehension.
